There are certain phrases we all like to hear. Top of the list are: “I love you,” “I forgive you,” and “Let's eat.” Anyone would be happy to hear those words. Think about those phrases, and it seems like they also are a good way to explain the Gospel. God loves you. God forgives you. Let's eat. In Christ, God expresses sacrificial and unconditional love for us. In Christ, God forgives sinners of every kind. And in Christ, God welcomes us all to a feast where everyone who wants to come has a place at the table. During this series, we will look at how the love, grace, and mercy of God offers us a home where we can hear these words spoken to us, and know that God means it.
We have heard that God forgives, but plenty of us doubt it applies to us. We know what we’ve done. We find it hard to forgive ourselves. We struggle to forgive others. How can God forgive us? Do we ever run out of chances? Simon Peter swore he would never deny Jesus, and then he did. Three times. After the resurrection, Jesus found Peter again on the shore of the lake and reminded him of grace. The same way Jesus finds us and offers us grace.
