The Ten Commandments are among the most recognized texts in the Bible. We read them as a list of rules, or a fence around behavior. But what if that isn’t the whole story? The Ten Commandments were given to a people, newly freed from slavery, to shape them into something more: a community whose life together reflected the character of God. That is the purpose they can play in our lives today. The Ten Commandments aren’t just about what we should or should not do, they are about how our relationship with God shapes our relationships with others, and what our lives look like when God is at the center.
